We pause this blog for a Commercial Break

“Whosoever unlawfully and with violence or by any threat of violence  prevents any person from or obstructs him in working at or exercising,  his lawful trade or occupation, or beats or uses any violence or threat  of violence to any such person, with intent to prevent him, shall,  on conviction before two Justices, be liable to imprisonment  for a term not exceeding six months , or a fine not exceeding £20.”        The second time I was in Lockhart in this version of my life was in 2013 and I was on the trail of the Great Shearers’ strikes of the 1880’s and 90’s. Brookong Station, south west of the town on the Urana road was the place where Henry Baylis, the dour Scots Police Magistate from Wagga Wagga read this section of the Riot Act for the first time in the history of the colony.        I booked into the Commercial Hotel in the centre of town – a pub that’d caught my eye 3 years earlier - and then headed out to...

Walbundrie ... a pub and a community who are each other's greatest fans.

Listen up a bit, this is the story of a very decent pub.  I’m headed east from Tocumwal on the Murray and the rain catches me at Finley but by Corowa I’ve ridden through it and, dry but damn cold, begin heading north, hoping to camp under the bridge I know on Billabong Creek on the Urana Road. But at Walbundrie the pub’s open and the heavens are about to  so I pull in to thaw, drip dry and grab a warming glass of red.  Walbundrie and its pub used be known as Piney Range and this year it'll turn 170 years old.  Across the bar Adam and Lindy are dealing with the end-of-week mob and ‘of course it’s no problem’ to park Super Ten in under the cover of the veranda. I shed some layers and kick back. It’s humming, but not as busy as they’d expected – a  group of twelve had booked for lunch but not fronted (or cancelled) so, with Lindy and her offsider sister, Joanne, who’s come up to help out, handling the drinkers, Adam’s got time to talk and with no more riding t...

Well sh*t eh! The best pub at Ilfracombe, Qld

Image
The Wellshot Hotel Ilfracombe Qld           In 1954 the boss of the Qld A.W.U. was interviewed about the roots of unionism in the Sunshine state:  “The Labor Movement in Queensland as we know it-…., was born in the pastoral … In 1886, at Wellshot station … industrial trouble arose at shearing time because shearers would not accept the … slave-like conditions of work proposed (and) went on strike, and the news of their action went like a bushfire throughout the outback (and) when no settlement was reached at Wellshot the men began to march on Blackall (where, with shearers from other gangs and stations) they decided to form the Shearers' Union.”            Eventually this Shearers’ Union grew into the backbone of the organization which became the ALP in Barcaldine in 1892. The place of Wellshot Station and Ilfracombe in our political and social history were cemented forever.        ...

Pretty Pine Hotel .... with locals like Nipper, a host like Denise and a goat named, "Horse", you're pretty assured any visit will be memorable!

In the afternoon light in October, the pub at Pretty Pine looks misnamed – Gorgeous Jacaranda Hotel would be hugely more apposite. Just to the right of the main entrance a beautiful specimen is peacocking its purple display against the lowering sun. In the carpark, beside the Cobb Hwy a pair of John Deere headers, their trays tucked in behind is parked together with the wide-load warning ute. Inside three blokes are chatting to Denise - joint boss of the place with her partner, Twang - who’s behind the bar. They still have to walk the combines another 40kms over to Conargo before heading back in the ute and are hoping they’ll be back in time for tea. They’re from Rowena and they’re another face of the drought that’s ripping into the country: “We’ve all got our own farms carrying wheat, chickpeas and barley but we haven’t sown at home for two years.   We’ve come down to try to find some work down here to pay some of the bills.   We had a little bit over at...
